Got it working! I did a bit more searching based on the log "MPlayer interrupted by signal 13" and discovered that other owners of DLink Routers ( I have the DIR-655) have been having problems with the way RTSP interacts with its Application Level Gateway.
After upgrading the firmware (no difference) and turning off RTSP ALG on the router (under "Advanced-Firewall Systems") resolved the problem and everything seemed to start working. Anyhow, thanks bpa for a wonderful product, and for the tireless support you give all us newbs.
