Without the plugin, I think WFMU would display something like "Song Title" by Artist Name on Programme Name and without coverart. While this tells you what you need to know - it is not really how things are supposed to work. So with the plugin you should see artist, title, album name and coverart (via coversearch) and sometimes will see the programme name.
