Another example of a protocol going mad is mpeg-dash where people specifying it cracked their brains with options and combination to represent the same information. Designing standards is something I know quite well and they fell into the problem of server-sided designs without realizing the complexity impact on clients. A very common mistake. The result is that servers can chose to implement any subset that fits them but clients, which are the most constrained and distributed nodes have to implement them all. Totally insane.
