I moved away from running LMS on a PC years ago for exactly the reason you're finding. I moved it to a NAS, but performance was never great. I moved to a Pi using piCorePlayer with LMS a couple of years ago and haven't looked back. Fast to boot, speedy operation, and just keeps running. Mine lives under the stairs, with a direct network connection to my my switch, but it can just as easily run via Wi-Fi.
All you need is to buy a Raspberry Pi 4B 2GB RAM (you don't need the larger memory), a power supply, and a micro SD card. While you don't need a case or heatsink for what you'd be using it for, an 'Aluminium Armour' (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Raspberry-Pi-Aluminium-Armour-Heatsink/dp/B083G2R16Z) heatsink case is a cheap/great solution. 'docs.picoreplayer.org/how-to' (https://docs.picoreplayer.org/how-to) tells you, step by step, how to set up piCorePlayer and then how to install LMS on it. If you follow each step, it's really pretty easy.
