I haven't looked at the code change yet but what issues are you trying
to solve ?

When BBC started using https , test versions of the plugin preferred the
use of the https URLs but a number of users complained as their LMS
(often on a old NAS) could not be upgraded to handle so the intent of
the plugin was to make the plugin work on as wide a range of platform as
possible rather than enforcing https everywhere.  The situation may have
changed since those test versions.
