Fixed. I removed all files named 'spamassassin' and 'sa-*' from the system; they were quite old (2012-2015). Then installed 40 perl modules and a network tool as spamassassin dependencies followed by spamassassin. Ran sa-update to get new rules (no longer included with SA), restarted spamd, and it's up and running correctly. No errors running sa-learn on the spam file.
