I also discovered something else that may be germane. Last time there was screen corruption I took a screenshot of a program that has a dark background where the lines were very visible. After rebooting to a clean screen I opened the screenshot and it was completely clean and normal. I'm off to see if I can find a bug report about this, or maybe file one. But if I file a bug report I am handicapped by the fact that I cannot post a screenshot of the corruption.
