In the olden days, cable modems would remember your connected device's
MAC address.  To reset that, you needed to power cycle the cable
modem, and it would work fine the next time.  Sometimes, people cloned
the MAC address of the previous device instead.  The Business Class
cable modems route and have multiple LAN ports, so that's not
important anymore.  It isn't locked to a particular MAC address.  Some
of the newer cable modems (particularly if you are getting voice
service) have battery backup internally to comply with reliability
requirements in power outages, and power cycling doesn't help!  I seem
to recall there is a button or something to do the equivalent thing on
those, but don't remember the details.
