I guess people just don't do it for fun anymore. People just tend to like
working on big profitable  projects, and most proprietary projects are that
way; they don't realize the value of small projects with a genuine focus on
solving some problem despite little or no profit.

Another, perhaps more plausible, reason, is that people simply do not care
about software at all; I'm sure many of you have stories of friends or
cow-orkers using software from all sorts of places, disregarding license and
acceptable use.
