I dug into this story a little bit and in my opinion that rather than
laying the blame on "Linux zealots" why don't we ask instead why
Verizon simply didn't include a Linux guide in the CD and why MATC
"requires" MS Word when any word processing program would do?

It seems to me that a lot of things are so very skewed in favor of
Microsoft. And that business practices like these perpetuate the use
of programs where otherwise alternative FOSS are readily available. It
makes it that much harder to adapt to alternative software
environments.

The lady who is the subject of this article could have been spared all
this had Verizon and MATC been more considerate towards users of FOSS
and implemented practices that ensured anyone regardless of whether
they were using Windows or Linux had access to their services. Its a
pity that what could have been a rewarding and liberating experience
turned instead into an embarassing one.

This article isn't about a "marketing failure" for GNU/Linux. Rather
its a case in point why people are so resistant to change.
