I edited the etc/postfix/master.cf file as per http://rackerhacker.com/2007/07/04/enable-submission-port-587-in-postfix/(I'm assuming this is what was meant at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Postfix when it noted "you will need to edit /etc/postfix/master.cf to uncomment the relevant line for port 587 there.")
