Does it use GRUB as the bootloader?  If so, you can interrupt the boot process 
to go to the GRUB menu, edit the boot option, add the "single" kernel 
parameter, then boot.  This should put you in a shell script upon bootup.  I 
have used this in debian, ubuntu, and mandriva.

I don't know the equivalent for LILO.
