Do you absolutely need a dedicated server due to resource hungry apps or just want full control of the OS? If the latter, you can use a VPS. I'm using a VPS from tektonic.net as a testing ground of sorts. My only problem with them is that their solution doesn't have a swap space, so I couldn't test stuff like Oracle, not even the free express edition. But I've tested enterprise java apps on it using a Postgresql db, and I'm happy with the performance.
