You're probably referring to an internal modem. Try linuxant.org  have tried
once on the "so-called winmodem" it gave a lot of blood hours trying to make
it work with different flavor of linux but i got it going til the modem
died. I forgot man, i know linuxant drivers are not free but they have
something with lowered speed. but try googling there was this beta that i
download from a guy's website, it work fine. sorry do not know the site
anymore. 'twas long ago. But for the fruit of knowledge man you could make
it work. If it's really a serial modem, it would be more easy to make it
work. Knoppix live  cd or other live cd man and then try to find out which
module its loading for your modem if you got it working. then you could do
the rest.
