I guess this is also one use case where an extended warranty does
help. It will cost you more, but if it happens, you'll never cry. One
of my laptops has a 3 year warranty with Toshiba and they replaced the
motherboard and LCD already after the 2nd year which makes me feel
like I have a new laptop.

As for the issue, it definitely looks like a backlight problem. A
busted graphics chip will usually show no display at all even if there
is a backlight, but your case is reverse.
