On the lighter side of things, is Xserver the operating system used by mac
server-grade units?

Interesting to find a G5 server locally. I wonder how one comes by it.....

The latest Debian stable (Etch) will install cleanly on an Apple Xserve
G5 (the previous would after much voodoo followed by sprinkling blood of
chickens...). Refer to the manual to boot the OpenFirmware boot console
on the serial port (as the Xserve doesnt come with VGA/DVI output...
unless you attach a graphics card via a riser). The rest is pretty much
straightforward if you know OF.

The Xserve is known to support booting from CD and USB drives.

Terrasoft's Yellow-Dog Linux will also install on the G5, but I haven't
touched that distro ever.
