in my case, though i specified "localinstall", yum would still try to
download updates, it installs from the locally mounted FC6 CD but still
tries to download updates which makes it slow especially if you're connected
on a slow ISP.

For a newbie (no offense meant), this might be a bit more involved,
but a good exercise nevertheless.

To the OP: if you still have the install CDs/DVD, use yum localinstall
/path/to/mounted/install/CD/RPMS/gnome-desktop

If you have net connection, yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment"

man yum for more details.
