This is a commercial outfit. The business model is based on voluntary contributions to website you like. As a consumer I feel this is a better model than the "ads" model. Having said that one can't think of replacing the "ads" model entirely. I think various creations such as movies, novels can be funded this way. Consumers voluntarily pay the creator. Of course, easier said than done! OSS, of course exists on this model.
