You need to change the runlevel entry in /etc/inittab
I have not tried Suse 10.1, but on Suse 9.x and Fedora/Redhat run level 3 
corresponds to multiuser text mode, while run level 5 corresponds to multi 
user mode with X windows startup.
This is differnet on Debian based distros.
