LFS is a great learning experience. You learn from building the toolchains to 
building, installing and configuring various packages. It helps to understand 
Linux as well as other GNU based system. You can learn building cross 
toolchains etc through CLFS.

However if you are targetting to be merely a system administrator or build 
your distro then it may not excite you that much.
