``Customizability" in a broader perspective. My mom, who has taken a
fancy to the UI of Linux felt odd when she got to know that in Windows
you cannot change the look and feel of the UI. This was after I showed
her various window managers' - KDE, GNOME, AfterStep.

I never showed her Windows in the beginning, she started with Linux as
her desktop. Later I showed her Windows too, which she curiously tried
to work with. Once she had a tough time trying to uninstall something
on Windows - the s/w was being shown in the Add/Remove programs list,
but it was not allowing her to uninstall (most of Windows s/w lacks
the `clean uninstall' feature).

Now she is pretty happy with Debian (yeah!!!) - as it allows her to
check emails pretty neatly, she even knows to do a `pon' and `poff' to
connect and disconnect.

Her knowledge, and exploring around of the Linux desktop might be very
limited - but KDE has never turned her down till date for her needs,
and she is pretty happy with it.

``Freedom of choice" - which is intrinsic to human nature is offered
by Linux (and other free OSes' too.) The only thing is, while using
Windows, you are never aware that such a thing exists, as your
condition is like that of a frog in a well, who thinks that this is
the whole world!

My experiment with introducing someone to Linux first at least seems
pretty successful, and I am happy with it! :-)

Best,
Amar
