i was able to restore the bootloader but for that i
had to reinstall xp(only C: formatted) and reinstall
mandrake linux (had to format all the linux
partitions). now i am able to boot in xp as well as
mandrake. thanks a lot guys for the suggestions.

i had a small issue, mandrake was not detecting the
ethernet card. after some search i manged to solve it
using 'Configure your computer' option.

previously i had redhat 9.0 installed. it was tough
time for me to install and configure mplayer. but with
mandrake it was very simple(just had to select the
package when installing)

watched a movie using mplayer. but i would note the
quality of 'windows media player' is far better than
mplayer.
