The size of the movies is determined by the data stream in them, Most tools try to give an approximate way of specifying the size, but it is never exact. The 900M AVI is probably the best that can be achieved using the codecs (and relevant parameters) that you specified. If you try to reduce the file size further that may result in degradation of the movie quality.

You might want to try to reduce the size of the movie by encoding the audio stream at a lower bitrate or (god forbid) mono-sound. The resultant savings would not be huge, but its worth a try.

(I'm using the instructions at the end of the mplayer manpage, and am
using DivX5 with libavcodec)

Try Xvid codec which is a lot better than the DivX one. Furthermore it is free-software. :-)

Also, is there any other software that I could use for this?

The AutoGK suite on Win32 systems [http://www.autogk.net/] may be worth your while. It is free software too. :-)

If you have any other tips/pointers on DVD-ripping, could you please
let me know as well?
