Since you mentioned that you use Fedora, I'd suggest you use 'yum' download 
and learn more about it here:

I guess mapping the usb to COM should be pretty straight forward with the 
usbserial module. However, I'm sorry you'd have to wait for somebody who has 
had experience with Reliance phones to help you out with the actual details.

Install the autologin rpm and configure your display manager (gdm ??)

Well, that wouldn't be recommended. More so because the build system for the 
kernel has undergone some major changes since the 2.4 days. If you already 
have the sources I'd reccomend re-configuring your kernel.
    Another advantage of doing this, is that you can actually see what's new 
and choose to use new features which are typically disabled by default when 
they are introduced.
