"/sbin/service iptables stop" solved it.
linux firewall was blocking packets going back to xp.
I cud see the Rx led blinking but not Tx led on fedora
box. Surprisingly an application on FC2
"system-config-securitylevel" which can be used to
enable/disable firewall was showing "firewall
disabled" so I didn't suspect the firewall playing
foul at first.
Will play around with iptables now to see if can
configure it and have ping working when iptables is
running.
