gmplayer is a gui for mplayer that comes with the mplayer sources. If
you've downloaded the "official" mplayer sources from the mplayer
website

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/

Then you already have the sources for gmplayer. To build it, all you
need to do is use

./configure --enable-gui

instead of just

./configure

Other front-ends to mplayer are also available, such as
KMPlayer
KPlayer

You can find these both at http://www.kde-apps.org/

I find it convenient to associate all video types with mplayer
(without the gui) and audio-types-that-dont-play-with-xmms, such as
wma, with gmplayer -- nothing like the brutal raw speed and power of
mplayer :) Even without a GUI -- the keyboard shortcuts are very easy
and have a neat OSD -- which largely obviates the need for a GUI in
most cases :)
