I use gentoo almost exclusively, but then I have a broadband connection. 
I don't bother with dtage 2 or higher, I compile everything from 
scratch. Portage ROCKS. All of this won't help you of course, cause I'm 
in South Africa, but sometimes it helps to know there's another gentoo 
freak out there to help...

Also, If you would like, I have a short script, that cleans out unused 
files in /usr/portage/distfiles (with a --pretend switch, so don't 
worry) Shout if your interested.
