I solved this part with a "mount -t usbfs none /proc/bus/usb". I have made an 
appropriate entry in /etc/fstab for the same. But /var/log/messages doesnt 
report the usb-storage driver or the scsi_mod seeing the camera. Also a 
cat /proc/scsi/scsi gives 
Attached devices: none
While digikam now autodetects the camera in PTP mode, it fails to 
connect/download from the camera. USB Mass storage still fails to work with 
the "not a valid block device" error.
