Are you using 98se, your ultra stable OS? Then I guess you could explain the 
misreporting.

Firstly that is 7KBps

The calculation is simple bit byte conversion AG. 8b=1B. 56kb/8 = 7KBps. So 
obviously the speeds reported aren't really possible.
