You answered your question in your mail itself. Slick marketing of inferior & substandard products and the policy of 'killing off the competition' has brought about the effect that whenever one thinks of an IT product (say an Operating System), the first thing that swims across someone's eyes is a box with 'Microsoft' written in friendly lettering all over it.
