Hmmm? Isn't it "2.6.8.1-mdk" not vanilla 2.6.8.1? In LKML (the Linux kernel developers' mailing list) people are saying that 2.6 won't really be stable, rather its up to the distibutor to release "stabilised" versions of the kernel hence the "-mdk" 'sub-version'. You will almost certainly run into trouble if you try downloading and compiling the vanilla kernel releases and not those release by the distro maker! > Nevertheless you still have to tweak the 2.6.8.1 to support basic > laptop > functionality like APM, ACPI and Wireless Tools/Support (note, this By "tweak" I hope you mean you just have to change some settings in the Mandrake Control Center UI under KDE or GNOME! I hope you dont mean one has to manually struggle to get any laptop features like battery/wireless to work?! I was hoping 10.1 would have better support for my laptop including wireless (10.0 works fine but I havent tried wireless with it). Anyway, the 10.1 you have installed now is probably the beta/RC version or the "community" version which is also kind of like a pre-release version. I would recommend you wait for free 10.1 "final" release to come out (November or December) and then make your judgements 8-) Also, 10.0 (final) works just fine and peachy for me on my Sony Vaio laptop (havent tried USB/MemoryStick or my wireless PCMCIA D-Link 802.11b card) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
