I've also found that the "locate" package makes my life a lot easier. It
periodically creates a database of your file structure–the frequency of
which you define with a cron job–such that it is then able to quickly
search the DB and return a result.
On Ubuntu, there's a basic "locate" package, but it also appears there's
"plocate" (Debian-based distros) and "mlocate" (RHEL-based distros)
packages as well.
The latter two (whichever is appropriate) claim significantly improved
performance.
