Package: lib32nss-mdns
Version: 0.10-3
Severity: minor

Googleearth needs that lib32nss-mdns is installed to run.
However, this pulls in avahi-daemon and other stuff.
If only lib32nss-mdns is installed (dpkg --force-all),
googleearth does work well.

I think that the depends:avahi-daemon could be lowered
to a recommends:avahi-daemon (which will be installed
by default, but it would be possible to keep it out).

lib(32)nss-mdns requires avahi-daemon: it is non-functional without it.
Removing that dependency is the wrong place to break the chain; the
right place would be for things that do not strictly need mDNS
name resolution to not have hard dependencies on lib(32)nss-mdns.

For example, Google Earth could have had a weaker dependency (Recommends)
on lib32nss-mdns. I believe that dependency was only there to work around
a historical glibc bug (its error behaviour when a configured NSS module
is missing was wrong), and that was fixed several years ago.

In any case, there is no longer a lib32nss-mdns package, so there
is nothing to do to resolve this bug.

I have added an automated test to libnss-mdns that will verify that the
glibc bug does not come back.
