This eventually *did* turn out to be a bug in NetworkManager itself, and only became visible now because of the beta version number. I validated that the fix https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/-/commit/e1e9abdf041b4cc backports cleanly on top of 1.29.90 and fixes the assertion and the python-dbusmock tests. Thus moving this bug back to NM. I don't think this beta version should move into testing, as it's prone to cause assertion crashes in real-life situations as well.
