Just wanted to let you know that I was having the same issue as the person who
reported pulseaudio bug #773086. I'm running Gnome3 on Debian 7.8. The speaker
icon in the taskbar was always muted when I logged in and would become
initiated when I adjusted the volume slider. After some web based research, I
installed the 'alsa-utils' package which pulled in the 'alsa-base' package
also. Rebooted the system and speaker icon was normal with sound working
flawlessly. I'm not 'super-techie' but thought that maybe this would help!
