Alas, I have not found any other software yet, where watchin DVDs is
possible in Debian. Current mplayer from jessie is only showing a
black window and mpv doesn't seem to be able to find the beginning of
the movie...
Haven't checked with other players yet.
I'm using vlc (and associated packages like ffmpeg and libav) from the
deb-multimedia repo. There have been a few upgrades of the named packages
lately and now playing DVD is OK.
So maybe the problem was with the deb-multimedia packages or the
interaction with Debian's own libraries. Don't know. It works now.
So I'm taking back my assertion. Sorry for the noise.
