When audacity plays a sound file, it plays at 4 or 5 times normal speed, sounding garbled, and then hangs. It has to be killed manually with system monitor. If audacity is launched from a terminal, and the sound played, the line: ALSA lib pcm.c:7843:(snd_pcm_recover) underrun occurred occurs repeatedly until the program is killed.
