VLC heavily distorts audio in DV files. The exact problem seems to depend on the install. This install manages to give a recognizable part which is just polluted by loud noise. While on Windows, I couldn't recognize speech. According to upstream bug reports, this affects files where DV audio is coded on 12 bits, but if I'm reading correctly what VLC says, the affected files are coded on 16 bits.
I verified that going from 2.0.4 to trunk nightlies fixes the problem on Windows. I did not verify on Debian, but this should be fixed in 2.1. The test cases on upstream tickets 3685 and 4828 can be used.
