The proposed patch indeed fixes the issue (it took me some time to setup a test environment to dist-upgrade from squeeze to wheezy including my package), so I'm in the process of uploading it to DELAYED/2 (it will take some time with my bandwidth), please let me know if I should delay it any longer. I'll take care of the unblock request. I guess the debian/vlc-nox.preinst can also be removed, but I didn't rebuilt the package just to test it.
