if I remember correctly.

This appears to come from the debian build system. On the other hand, configure seems to look for "parisc" or "parisc64". I played with configure a bit but didn't get it to add -fPIC
automatically.

I got the package to build by hacking debian/rules to force adding -fPIC during shared build.
