Please disregard my earlier workaround, since it turns out that VLC plays files from SMB just fine.
What I found out is that, this problem doesn't exist on shares that are not password protected. These files will play just fine. But what won't be played is shares that are password protected; even though you mount them with proper password, this is when the mentioned error will occur. This may even be an Samba issue, since it turned out that VLC plays "regular" SMB shares just fine.
