I'd also suggest to go this way. Please get an account on alioth.d.o and apply for the pkg-multimedia team. I (or any other admin) will add you as soon as possible.
Then please follow the steps described here <http://wiki.debian.org/DebianMultimedia/DevelopPackaging> under "Uploading proposed package to the team git repository".
