I still consider this a regression, since previous behavior is horribly broken, also with respect upstream "assumptions", e.g. StumpWM manual creation: http://git.debian.org/?p=pkg-common-lisp/stumpwm.git;a=commitdiff;h=753da55eed1f889894eb3c9a3f4c14668c034ece BTW, IMHO this change would have required a major release bump.
