I have solved the problem. I don't know what
went wrong on all three servers with the upgrade from 0.99 to
0.99.2 but the following fixes everything: apt-get purge clamav clamav-base clamav-daemon clamav-freshclam clamdscan libclamav7 apt-get install clamav clamav-daemon So, by just totally uninstalling clamav, including its configuration files, and then doing a reinstall from scratch solves the problem.
