I've moved aside the old repository (not updated in ~3 years) and started over
with a current repository updated to use git-dpm. Here's some documentation
on using git-dpm:

https://wiki.debian.org/PackagingWithGit/GitDpm
http://git-dpm.alioth.debian.org/manpage.html

Some of the documentation still says "until there is a Debian package ...",
but there is a Debian package (the versions in stable/testing/unstable are all
usable).

I like this approach since you get a proper source package out of the process
at the end so that the changes to the upstream source are understandable
without having to consult back to git.

0.98.1+dfsg-2 should migrate to testing tomorrow, so we can upload additional
changes almost as soon as they are ready.
