Ok! I am really in the dark here. I have tried several different things and
none of them have worked.

I want to create a test bulletin board on my personal box. Once this is
completed, I am going to try to get this set up at the ISP that runs a web
site for a club I belong to. They just need to know what they need to do
this. I thought if I could get this running on my system first, then I
would know what to tell them. I am not running Apache. Just the standard
Windows IIS5+ default web site and FrontPage.

I have looked at PHPbb and it seems to be really good. I think that I need
to install PHP. Also I have MySQL, Access, and I think that I have MSSQL7.0
on my box. I say that I think that I have it because when I updated
FrontPage 2002 and got the extensions intalled, something called Team Share
appeared along with a MSSQL server icon residing in my tray.

I have tried to install PHPbb and PHP, but I must be missing something.
Some step is missing somewhere.

I would like someone to point me in the direction that I need to go.

What do I need on my box to get a bulletin board to work?
What needs to be installed and in what order?

Some of the problems that I have run into are that PHP doesn't seem to
install correctly. And it keeps talking about file extensions, but it never
sets up the associations.

Currently all of the packages are off the box with the exception of MSSQL
and Access.

Please help if you can. I will take direct e-mail if you like.

In IIS admin, go to the web site, right click and select properties, select
'home directory' tab, click 'configure', click 'Add'. In the 'extension' box
type '.php' and browse for the php.exe (often c:\php\php.exe) in Executable
box. OK your way out.

Next create a file called phpinfo.php in the home directory:
<html><body><?php echo phpinfo(); ?></body></html>
View it through http://localhost/phpinfo.php (or whatever the domain is). If
you see a pretty page, it's working. If you don't, or see code, consult the
docs again.

Sounds like a FrontPage extension, not the database itself. AFAIK they don't
give it away with FrontPage - do you remember spending €6500 recently? If
not, stick with MySQL. Make sure it's running (little traffic light lower
left on screen with green light showing). If not run
\path\to\mysql\bin\winmysqladmin.exe.

The rest is probably best asked on one of the PHPbb forums - got it running
on my box just fine (Win2k, MSSQL2000). It's well worth it :)

It is a bit unclear what you want to do. Do you want to:

a) develop a BBS your self?
b) install a pre-existing BBS?
--- End Message ---
--- Begin Message ---
As I stated in the first message, I am interested in phpbb. This is a
pre-designed BBS as far as I know. I needs PHP in order to run I think. So
all I want to do is install what is necessary and run the canned BBS.

Ok, so your question is basically "How do I install php?"

The answer top this question is:

consult www.php.net/manual which will cover most
things you need to know to get php up and running.

I am in the process of installing PHP. One of the screens is asking for my
SMTP server and the from address for the mail function. I am assuming that
the SMTP server is the one that I use for getting and sending mail currently
in Outlook. It is the one provided by my ISP. The from address is my
associated email address.

The screen defaults to "localhost" and me@localhost. Are these just
examples?

Thanks Matt. I got PHP installed and I created the page for the web and
viewed it.

Now before I install the PHP BBS, I think that I need to have the database
running. Let me expand on the MSSQL thing. I have seen this icon in the
tray of some other customers. It appears like a server with a green arrow
in it. When I double click in the icon it maximizes to a 4 inch by 4 inch
dialog box that says SQL Server Service Manager. It has three services
available. Distributed Transaction Coordinator, MSSQL Server and SQL Server
Agent. I was at a training session a week ago where they had MSSQL
installed and played around with it a little and it had the same options on
it. Now, I agree with you. Microsoft never gives anything away. But what
is it and what can I do with it? Can I get a MSSQL database running?

Oh well. I have not re-installed MySQL yet, so if you can tell me anything
about this and the next step, I would appreciate it. I have the phpbb ready
to install, but again this is not very clear.

any reason why my echo statement doesn't work in this script?

<?
  mysql_select_db("tutorial");
  $query = "SELECT DATE_FORMAT(tutdate, '%b-%e %l%p') as date FROM
tutorial_table";
  $result = mysql_query($query);
  $num_results = mysql_num_rows($result);

    for ($i=0; $i <$num_results; $i++)
  {
     $row = mysql_fetch_array($result);
     $vardate = stripslashes($row["tutdate"]);
     echo "$vardate";
  }
?>

Tim,

This simple script works

$row = "abcd\efg";

$r1 = stripslashes($row);

print "NO STRIP >$row< <br>";

print "STRIP >$r1< <br>";

And gives the output

NO STRIP >abcd\efg<
STRIP >abcdefg<

What do you mean by "doesn't work"?
Have you checked if you are stripping an empty string, for instance ?

Tim

In your select statment you have labeled the returned column as date yet
your mysql_fetch_array uses the label 'tutdate' - the labels don't match...

To fix it, either do this...

$query = "SELECT DATE_FORMAT(tutdate, '%b-%e %l%p') as tutdate FROM
tutorial_table";

or do this ...

$vardate = stripslashes($row['date']);

Hi - I need to run some system commands using passthru() or exec() but every
single one I do gives me an "unable to fork" error. For example, when trying
to make a call to an ImageMagick tool:

<?php
Header("Content-type: image/gif");
passthru("C\imagemagick\convert -crop 0x0 -bordercolor white -border 10x10
inputfile.png GIF:-
?>

I've got PHP 4.2.3 installed on a Win NT 4 SP6a server running IIS (PHP is
running in CGI mode). I have the IIS Lockdown tool installed and URLscan,
which I think prevents web users from running cmd.exe, which I think may be
part of the problem as I vaguely rememvber reading that since PHP 4.06
cmd.exe us appended in fgron of all system calls...

Would using Apache as the webserver instead of IIS help?

Anyway, does anyone have any of the program execution functions (exec(),
passthru(),system(), etc.) running without errors on PHP 4.2.x. and
Windows? If so, please let me know how you did it! :-)

cheers

Paul

Hi everyone,

i have a tricky situation here...

I'm working on a project that requires session for logins.
The problem is PHP DOES NOT generate a new session id, even if the
appropriate functions are used. I have a little login test site that worked
absolutely perfect, with sessions generated at EVERY login. At logout, the
session is destroyed and DELETED from HDD. When i login again PHP generates
THE SAME session string. How come PHP does this all of the sudden, when I
did not make modifications to my php.ini ?

Does anyone know how come this happens ?

PLEASE send me some help. I really appreciate it !

Thank you so much !

I use PHP 4.2.2 under Apache 1.3.22 as module, on XP Proffesional.

; WARNING ;
;;;;;;;;;;;
; This is the default settings file for new PHP installations.
; By default, PHP installs itself with a configuration suitable for
; development purposes, and *NOT* for production purposes.
; For several security-oriented considerations that should be taken
; before going online with your site, please consult php.ini-recommended
; and http://php.net/manual/en/security.php.

;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; About this file ;
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; This file controls many aspects of PHP's behavior. In order for PHP to
; read it, it must be named 'php.ini'. PHP looks for it in the current
; working directory, in the path designated by the environment variable
; PHPRC, and in the path that was defined in compile time (in that order).
; Under Windows, the compile-time path is the Windows directory. The
; path in which the php.ini file is looked for can be overridden using
; the -c argument in command line mode.
;
; The syntax of the file is extremely simple. Whitespace and Lines
; beginning with a semicolon are silently ignored (as you probably guessed).
; Section headers (e.g. [Foo]) are also silently ignored, even though
; they might mean something in the future.
;
; Directives are specified using the following syntax:
; directive = value
; Directive names are *case sensitive* - foo=bar is different from FOO=bar.
;
; The value can be a string, a number, a PHP constant (e.g. E_ALL or M_PI),
one
; of the INI constants (On, Off, True, False, Yes, No and None) or an
expression
; (e.g. E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE), or a quoted string ("foo").
;
; Expressions in the INI file are limited to bitwise operators and
parentheses:
; |        bitwise OR
; &        bitwise AND
; ~        bitwise NOT
; !        boolean NOT
;
; Boolean flags can be turned on using the values 1, On, True or Yes.
; They can be turned off using the values 0, Off, False or No.
;
; An empty string can be denoted by simply not writing anything after the
equal
; sign, or by using the None keyword:
;
; foo = ; sets foo to an empty string
; foo = none ; sets foo to an empty string
; foo = "none" ; sets foo to the string 'none'
;
; If you use constants in your value, and these constants belong to a
; dynamically loaded extension (either a PHP extension or a Zend extension),
; you may only use these constants *after* the line that loads the
extension.
;
; All the values in the php.ini-dist file correspond to the builtin
; defaults (that is, if no php.ini is used, or if you delete these lines,
; the builtin defaults will be identical).

Hi Kon,

If your using PHP version 4.1.x and above this doesn`t work automaticly.
Either turn register_globals back On in the php.ini file or (better) use
the new superglobals to acces the variables. Use
$HTTP_GET_VARS['variable'] or HTTP_POST_VARS['variable'] to get to echo
those variables so u get echo $HTTP_POST_VARS['variable']; I hope this
is what u mean and it works.

Best regards,

phpMyAdmin does it like this:

    $bgcolor          = ($i % 2) ? $cfg['BgcolorOne'] :
$cfg['BgcolorTwo'];

Obviously you'd have your $cfg['BgcolorOne'] and $cfg['BgcolorTwo'] set
to different colors, or change those variables right there.

Subject: [PHP-WIN] Alternate table rows

Hi people,..

I have a table wich is created with php and ofcourse the data comes from
a database. To make it more readable i would like to alternate the color
of each table row. For instance 1st row:#efefef 2nd row:#d3d3d3 and so
on... Does anyone knows a solution..? I am now using the folowing piece
of code:

<?php
$select = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM products ORDER BY name ASC LIMIT
$start,10"); for ($i=0;$i<mysql_num_rows($sql_id);$i++)
{
        $sql = mysql_fetch_assoc($select);
        //Table
        echo "
        <table cellpadding=\"2\" cellspacing=\"1\"
bgcolor=\"#ffffff\">\n
        <tr>\n
        <td bgcolor=\"#efefef\">".sql['products']."</td>\n//First row
        </tr>\n
        <tr>\n
        <td bgcolor=\"#efefef\">Second row</td>\n
        </tr>\n
        </table>\n";
}
?>

Well u get the idea i think, can anyone help me. Any help is greatly
appreciated.;-)

I am looking at the different version for MySQL under Windows.

I have downloaded one zipi file entitled "mysql-max-3.23.49-win" and
second one named "mysqlgui-win32-static-1.7.5-2"

Which one is the right one to install?

and other things. I installed Apache 1.3.27 and that
works fine. I then downloaded PHP4 and was trying to
configure it to the Apache web server. I followed all
instructions in the instalation guide, but still get
this error when I try to run any php scripts from the
browser:
"Premature end of script headers: c:/php/php.exe"

Any idea why this would happen? And how to correct it?

thanks,
Prachi.

Dean,
try www.impchat.com for a very nifty little mail app for win98 called
HermMail - freeware.
Haven`t been there for a long while so can`t be certain it is still there -
worth a try.
