Yeeach !! What happens if you print the variable's LENGTH, doing $n=strlen($variable); print "$variable($n)";
I have a similar problem, where sometimes a variable is not printed, but as a length greater than zero... If $n is >0, than you could be "suffering" from a bug within PHP. If not, I am starting to run out of ideas...
