It's remarkably easy to get the hang of. I recently built a php app to do just this, and after some great pointers from this list found: http://www.devshed.com/Server_Side/PHP/PHPMail/PHPMail1/page1.html which pretty much teaches you all you need to know. The industrial strength stuff is really going to come from you however. That's more a case of programming defensively (which imo should be done as a matter of course these days)
