I am limited to editing as well (no debug) and, after trying several tools, have settled on ConTEXT (http://www.fixedsys.com/context), which provides syntax highlighting, which is real handy when I've failed to key the final quote on a string, etc. This editor will show line numbers as well and these match error messages that come from PHP.
