As you are compiling php yourself, it sounds like you have a
pre-installed version of php somewhere Jeff that needs to be
uninstalled. Use smart (if you have it) to look for any
pre-installed versions of php that need removing.

I did a build of PHP 5.1.4, and it created and applied shared extensions within:
Installing shared extensions:
/usr/local/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20050922/
Performed for several extensions "sudo peardev install pecl/pdo"... /apc, ...
/json, ... /memcache, etc...
And all extensions were loaded into:

However, when starting a php page with phpinfo(), the PHP info shows the
[xdebug] info, but fails to show the other shared extensions:
